Aeshna cyanea, male
Aeshna cyanea (male)
English name: Southern Hawker
Dutch name: Blauwe glazenmaker
Photo taken in the Plateaux,
The Netherlands, September 1999

Note: This species, whether the individual is teneral or mature, is always recognizable by the large, oval spots on the shoulders. Also note that, unlike with other European Aeshnids, the light spots on segments 9 and 10 are connected (so they are over the full width of the segments). Both spots on the shoulder and the "tail light" are visible in flight.
