Erythromma najas
Erythromma najas (copula)
English name: Red-eyed Damselfly
Dutch name: Grote roodoogjuffer
Photo taken at the Beerze, Kampina, NB (NL), June 2001

Note: There's two Erythromma species in Europe: E. najas and E. viridulum. E. viridulum is a little smaller than E. najas. Distinguishing feature for the (mature) males is the amount of blue on the abdomen: Erythromma viridulum has blue on segment 2 and the sides of segment 8, E. najas hasn't. Besides, Erythromma najas starts flying earlier in the season than E. viridulum.
